They escape to an uninhabited (or is it?) planet, where they crash. For reasons not known to them, this triggers a race to capture the survey ship by all the main alien races in the galaxy. ![]() A joint human/dolphin/chimpanzee survey expedition (the first commanded by a dolphin) discovers an ancient alien fleet. ![]() Humans have uplifted dolphins and chimpanzees. In exchange, they enter a client relationship with the uplifting species. This week: Startide Rising by David BrinĪ novel in the Uplift universe, where species are “uplifted” to a higher level of intellectual functioning by more advanced species. Instead, this is an attempt to become more well read in the genre and try some old masters with Jo Walton as my guide. I am absolutely not going to read all the Hugo winners, let alone all nominees. Her enthusiasm led me to make new Goodreads shelf titled “Jo Walton recommends”, consisting entirely of old Hugo winners, nominees and books Walton thinks should have been nominated, in addition to some short story collections by frequent winners/nominees in the short fiction categories. I read Jo Walton’s An Informal History of the Hugos for Bingo this year. ![]()
